Air conditioning systems are major commitments. You definitely don’t want to fall into the trap of buying an air conditioning unit that’s just not perfect for you. If you do so, you’ll likely end up having to deal with it for years and years on end. An air conditioning unit that’s optimal for your lifestyle is a must whether you live in Apple Valley or anywhere else.

Pay attention to air conditioning unit size. Make a point to buy an air conditioning system that’s the appropriate size for your space. If you make the mistake of getting an air conditioning unit that’s simply too big for your business or residence, that could result in the need for significantly more energy. This is because units that are large tend to cycle a lot. Since these units turn on and off a lot, they’re also vulnerable to time-consuming and annoying breakdowns. If you want to select an air conditioning unit that’s sized appropriately for your business or home, seek advice from an experienced HVAC technician.

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF AIR FILTERS

Your air conditioner’s filter may seem like an unimportant element of the system, and it is certainly easy to ignore it because of its location. Most homeowners believe that the filter’s job is to clean their indoor air supply, but this is actually not the main role of this simple system component. The reality is that many HVAC problems trace to poor filter management, making consistent evaluation of your air filter a top priority as your cooling system operates through the summer months in the San Bernardino area.

An air filter removes solid material from your airstream, which has a direct impact on indoor air quality. However, the primary need for the removal of these particles is protection of the air handler’s components. Your evaporator coils, drain pan, and fan are typically located just beyond the filter, and when solid material infiltrates this space, it settles on these parts. The dehumidification that occurs as your air conditioner operates causes this to be a rather humid environment, and the solid materials absorb that moisture to create a grimy layer on the coils and other parts. This layer can reduce the cooling efficiency of your air conditioner by impacting the ability of refrigerant moving through the coils to remove heat from the indoor air. The reality is that your air filter is essential for achieving excellent home comfort and energy usage results.

With heavy cooling activity, more frequent filter evaluation is recommended. A dirty filter can interfere with your system’s airflow, which can cause your compressor to work hard while also negatively impacting your home comfort levels. According to the United States Department of Energy, a dirty filter can reduce the efficiency of your air conditioner by as much as 15 percent.

TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR HOME AIR QUALITY

Enhancing your indoor air quality could improve the efficiency of your home’s air conditioning system in the coming months in San Bernardino County. In fact, year-round attention to your indoor air can enable your heating and air conditioning to provide better comfort levels with less energy. Although modern construction can improve energy efficiency in the home, one of the drawbacks is that indoor air quality can be negatively impacted due to the air tight sealing that is accomplished. Indoor air can be significantly more polluted than outdoor air because of the limitations of natural ventilation. Following are some important strategies for managing the pollutants in your home’s air supply.

           Purification and Ventilation Matter

Your air filter can help to remove solid particles from the air supply in your home, but as filters clog, more particles pass into the air handler and settle on interior parts. This can promote the development of mold and bacteria in your air handler, which could lead to further contamination of the air. By supplementing your HVAC system with an air cleaner, you could further purify the circulating air, especially if you invest in a germicidal air cleaner, which can trap and destroy biological materials. You may also want to think about installing a UV lamp in your air handler to destroy those germs that settle in the space.

After the winter, your heater will have gotten a pretty good workout. Once it’s turned off, it’s a good time for your heating and air conditioning technician to check out the moving parts and make sure everything is running properly. This is a great time to clean the system, and check the motor and fans. The venting system can be checked for blockages.

A certified technician can remove the blower wheel and check it for dirt or debris. The heat exchanger and wiring can be checked for damage or corrosion. The electrical and gas can be checked for safety. The air intake grill can be cleaned and the filter replaced. These services will give you the peace of mind that your system will be safe and efficient for the rest of the winter and ready again when you fire it up this fall.

Depending on the agreement, the tenant may be responsible for maintenance and replacement of a system. Other agreements will hold the landlord responsible for the heating & air system.

Regular or preventive maintenance can go a long way in keeping a heating system in Victorville, or an air conditioning system in San Bernardino running smoothly. Having a trained technician check for issues like leaking refrigerant can prevent the building from getting too hot and prevent the condenser from over working or burning out. It is a lot less expensive to have a system checked, cleaned and lubricated than to replace it.

           Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is frequently an issue in commercial buildings. The first step to solving an air quality issue is to find the source of the problem. Dust is a common culprit. Keeping filters clean and eliminating extra dust is a start. If the problem is severe, upgrading the filter system or adding a ventilation system may be the answer. Moisture can also be an issue. If the heated air in the building is too dry, a humidifier may be the solution.

Fumes are another common issue in commercial buildings. Reducing the use of harsh chemicals and pesticides in the building can help. Other issues like perfume, smoke and air fresheners may need to be addressed as well. If there is an air quality issue in a building, finding the source is the first step. Particles, dust from paper fragments, even fumes from new carpeting or furniture can be the problem. Common sense, regular cleaning, and sometimes a little detective work may be the answer to fixing an indoor air quality problem. A trained HVAC technician can help find a solution for indoor air quality and comfort issues.

Often when something goes wrong with your furnace, it’s pretty obvious: Something stops working and you need to get it repaired. Sounds simple, right? But the truth is that sometimes your Apple Valley furnace does something weird, and you just aren’t sure why. Here are some surprising winter HVAC issues, and what they really mean for your system.

Strange Smells When Using a New System

This is usually nothing to be too worried about. If you are like many San Bernardino residents, you probably didn’t use your heating system or furnace much when the weather was warmer. There’s a certain amount of dust that has built up in your system, which will fry when you turn the furnace on. It’s not really a fire hazard, and it won’t hurt your home, but for at least several hours you’ll have to get used to it. Cleaning and maintenance can help reduce the effects.

Ice Where There Shouldn’t Be Ice

Generally, if you are seeing a lot of weird ice on indoor or outdoor units, that means that something has gone wrong. This is most commonly seen on HVAC pumps (furnaces don’t really have ice problems) and often means that your refrigerant levels are off or that your coils need some work.

           Lots and Lots of Steam

Your heating system shouldn’t be steaming! Sometimes this can happen in the case of leaks or once again a malfunctioning heat pump. While it’s tempting to think that steam is somehow a natural process of heating (and some commercial heating systems do indeed use water to carry heat), if you notice steam from your HVAC system in Rancho Cucamonga, call in a technician to take a look.

Everything’s Working, But There’s No Heat

Remember that just because you can’t see a problem that doesn’t mean the problem isn’t there. If your furnace is working, but you aren’t getting any heat, the issue is probably a little harder to find. It’s often caused by clogs and blockages or other serious ductwork problems.

           My Furnace Never Stops!

It is nice that your furnace is working when you want it to – but it shouldn’t be working all the time. A furnace that doesn’t quit (and a house that never quite gets heated) probably has thermostat or fuel problems that need to be investigated.

           Natural Gas Furnace

Natural gas is one of the most common types of fuels to use for your furnace in your HVAC system. It is plentiful and tends to be one of the cheapest forms of fuel around. While prices tend to fluctuate based on distance and availability, you will probably pay less for natural gas than for most other types of fuel.

Of course, there is a catch or two. Natural gas infrastructure needs to be in place, which is common for most San Bernardino County locations, but may not apply to particularly distant locations. Also, keep in mind that natural gas is unpurified, which means it will produce a small amount of soot and fumes in your system, which will need to be cleaned away. Also, an efficient furnace is important when it comes to monthly savings.

           Propane Furnace

Propane is the typical solution for heating in areas that don’t have access to natural gas. If your Adelanto or Phelan home doesn’t have natural gas then you can install a propane tank and get refills when you start to run low. Propane does have several advantages – it is a purified, clean-burning gas that may cause fewer problems than natural gas. Depending on prices in your area, it may be comparable to natural gas – although the purification and transportation usually mean that propane will cost more.

           Electric Heating

Electric burners are very, very easy – they are simply heating elements that use electricity to create heat, the way an electric stovetop works. But imagine using a stovetop to heat your entire house, and you can see the problem here. While easy and quick, electric heating takes an incredible amount of energy to heating a room. That makes this option very, very expensive, which is why it is often reserved for back-up heating.

           Heat Pump

A heat pump doesn’t actually use fuel at all, but moves heat via reusable refrigerant gas. This is one of the most efficient types of heating available, but it only works efficiently in the more mild climates, so ask Victory Heating & Air if a heat pump could be right for you!

A zoned HVAC system – particular for houses that only have a single furnace or air conditioner – uses a combination of multiple thermostats throughout the house and dampers in the ductwork. This helps to divide a house (or an office space, for example) into different zones that can be regulated at different temperatures.

Zoning is an easy process to explain, but many owners are still left wondering, “Why would I do this?” There are several big changes that zoning from Victory Heating & Air can create, depending on your lifestyle.

           Zoning: Comfort

When discussing zoning, a common subject is the ways that people prefer different temperature levels. Zoning cannot always help with this; it cannot, for instance, bring two different temperatures to different parts of the same room in your San Bernardino home.

However, if someone is in the kitchen and someone else is in the bedroom, zoning can offer separate thermostats for both areas so the inhabitants can choose their preferred temperature in that room. As you can imagine, this also has lots of potential for office situations, where zoned systems are common.

           Zoning: Energy Control

What does energy control mean? It refers to the detailed setting of thermostats around the house or office to coincide with daily movement and activities. A zoned system allows for very detailed control of temperature levels, which allows you to use your system as efficiently as possible. By only heating, say, the living room instead of the whole house, your system can perform without using as much energy.

Multiply that efficiency across each day, and before long you can save a significant amount of electricity or fuel in the Apple Valley area, which in turn leads to lower monthly utility cost benefits.

correctly, it only uses the ductwork and units necessary for heating according to your zone setup. This often means that your system doesn’t have to work as long or as hard as a non-zoned HVAC setup. As a result, the lifespan of your equipment and ductwork can be extended over several years, with less need for maintenance and repair.

           Split HVAC Systems

The “split” in this type of HVAC system refers to how part of the equipment is located indoors and part of it is located outside in areas like Apple Valley. The two units are connected via pipes, usually with refrigerant.

Outside are a fan to manage airflow and a unit that contains both the condenser and compressor – this equipment compresses refrigerant and allows it to condense as a way to help transfer heat.Inside, the system includes the evaporator, which allows the refrigerant to evaporate again (in some units, like heat pumps, these jobs can actually switch based whether the system is heating or cooling), along with a powerful fan to circulate air throughout the house. If there’s no heat pump, the indoor unit typically contains a furnace of some kind.

These split systems are very common in most San Bernardino houses, and you can usually spot the outdoor unit on a concrete slab somewhere around the house. It may be more expensive to set up and maintain, but it also tends to be very efficient, which can lower the long-term utility cost. Containing the heat inside the house when necessary makes the system more effective at its job. Ask

A packaged system is made of one unit, typically a large system located in a particular spot, often on top of a roof or in a garage. The “package” includes the evaporator, condenser, compressor, and furnace all in one bundle.

These units are very rarely located indoors in Rancho Cucamonga or San Bernardino because they are used when space is very limited. By perching the packaged system outdoors, space is maximized. As you can imagine, our Victory Heating & Air technicians commonly see this setup in condos, apartments, studios, and upper-story offices. It is rarely seen on standalone residential housing.

for these units is understandably less expensive and maintenance is simple, but they do have their problems. They do not tend to be as efficient with heat dissipation as a split unit. Also, since all components are exposed to the outdoor weather, wear, tear, and repairs are all more common.

Air Conditioners Can Work Too Hard

The reason air conditioners can freeze in the hot summer lies in the way that the evaporator coil works. This coil is designed to siphon off heat from your indoor air and leak it into the outdoors. It does this by cooling itself down, which attracts the heat (heat always seeks equilibrium and will flow from warmer to colder areas). Presto! Your air becomes cooler.

Evaporators, at times, do their jobs too well and cool down too fast for proper heat transfer.

Low refrigerant levels can cause the refrigerant to move too fast, and sometimes there is simultaneously an airflow clog – whatever the reason. As a result, the coil freezes up, drawing in water from the air and turning it into ice. Not only can this cause your air conditioner to stop working until it melts, but it can also cause long-term damage and defects.

If you have noticed that your air conditioner does not seem to be working well lately, stop and look for this freezing issue, no matter how the weather conditions are outside.

If you live in the Apple Valley or Victorville area, Victory Heat & Air can help you make a smart purchase when the time comes to buy a new air conditioner. This includes offering advice when it comes to SEER ratings, an important metric used to rate AC units across the United States.

           What are SEER Ratings?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, an important ratio established by the Department of Energy to help businesses and homeowners judge how effective a particular HVAC unit is. The ratio is created by comparing the energy use of a particular unit model for one full season to how well that unit performs. In other words, how effectively the unit cools air for the power it uses.

This creates a basic number system so that you can tell at a glance how energy efficient any particular model is. The federal government occasionally updates requirements for SEER ratings on air conditioners to improve overall energy efficiency in the market. Now, only 13 SEER HVAC systems are allowed to be sold (14 SEER for Energy Star models). If your SEER rating is lower than this, then you could see significant improvements in monthly bills by purchasing a new system.

           SEER versus EER

Another rating system that you often see used when comparing units is EER. This is NOT the same as SEER, despite the similarity in the acronyms. EER stands for Energy Efficiency Ratio and is an older method of judging efficiency. The missing “seasonal” means that EER only tells you general cooling capacity compared to electricity use. It does not study efficiency over an entire season, which is why the numbers can differ. Because the SEER is used by the government, it tends to have priority. Since the results are spread out over an entire “season” of operation, it may give a better look at how a system operates over time.

How to Use SEER When Purchasing Air Conditioning?

SEER numbers are easy to use because it’s simply one number that can compare any unit from any brand when you are looking for a new system. However, don’t put too much stock in a small change. Upgrading from 15 SEER to 16 SEER won’t produce a sudden decrease in monthly costs, but will require you to buy a new, more expensive system. Moving from 10 SEER to 16 SEER, however, is likely to provide much higher savings, making it a more worthwhile purchase. Other factors, like scheduled maintenance, also play an important role in efficiency.

           1. Replace vs. Repair:

Should you repair your air conditioner, or should you replace it entirely with a new unit? This question often comes down to your current situation and cost analysis. If repairs are very expensive, it may be less expensive in the long term to simply buy a new heating and cooling unit. If you are renovating or your house has undergone significant changes, you may also want to choose a new system better able to cool and heat your home efficiently.

           2. Estimates Do Tend to Vary:

When examining Hesperia air conditioner services, remember that you can get different estimates from different services to compare before deciding. At Victory Heating & Air, we understand that you want the best can offer, which is why we provide you with quotes so you can spend some time looking at your options before picking one.

           3. Age and Climate are Important:

When considering repairs and replacements, know that both the age of your system and the climate of the high desert will affect our advice. For example, an AC unit that has been in consistent operation for around ten years is probably due for a replacement to help you save money and access new efficiency in your home. When it comes to climate, we’ll suggest the best new units and repairs to take advantage of your unique system.

           4. Space is Important:

How much space to you have for heating or cooling? The amount of cubic feet of air in your home will determine what kind of Hesperia AC unit you need. If that space has recently changed, you may need to change your system: Different units are rated for different spaces.

           5. New Systems Can Save Money:

It may sound far-fetched, but it is true. While the upfront cost of a new system is high, the higher efficiency rating means that you save money per month with a new unit. Over several years, this recoups the cost of your air conditioner and helps you start saving money.

Here’s how ducts can create heating and cooling difficulties – along with what to watch for and how deal with duct repair in the high desert and Hesperia area.

           Ducts and Dust

Even though you may not have thought about it before, the connection between duct work and dust is fairly obvious. All the air in your house eventually passes through your ducts as it is heated or cooled, and that means that it drags along a lot of the dust that can linger in your carpets or furniture – or simply float through the air. That dust is made of dead skin cells, pet dander, high desert pollen, and much more. Over time, all those particles can stick to the sides of your duct work, eventually turning into thicker and thicker deposits over time.

These deposits are dangerous for a couple different reasons. First, they can impede airflow and make your system work harder. Second, they can increase the number of allergens and other unpleasant particles in your home. Third, they can encourage the growth of mildew and mold, and help spread spores every time you use your system, which can lead to major clean up costs down the road. You can do a cursory check of dust levels by shining a flashlight into your ducts and taking a look around.

Another issue with air ducts is that, no matter their shape and size, they are usually very difficult to clean. Even the longest handles cannot do much good, especially with the twists and turns that duct work tends to take. The best solution, although it requires some investment, is a professional duct cleaning company that has equipment

Mold can be dangerous because it may not give any sign of growth until it is too late – it could grow through your ducts, crawlspace, or walls without you knowing. However, there is one thing that mold absolutely needs to grow, and that is moisture. The high desert is not known for its rainfall, but any leaks or condensation that create pockets of moisture are a sign that you may have mold problems. Look around your heating and cooling units and in your ductwork for signs of moisture when your

Mold can create two particularly serious problems in the Victorville and Hesperia area. First, it tends to infest porous surfaces and ruin them, so wood and fabric in particular that has mold on it usually needs to be destroyed to fully remove the mold. Second, some molds can be particularly dangerous to humans, and many can cause a variety of allergic reactions, presenting several different health issues.

Another problem with mold – and another reason to get mold issues fixed as soon as you can – is that mold issues are often very, very expensive to treat. The process is called mold remediation and goes through several steps that must be performed by qualified commercial professionals. Because insurance companies in the high desert and other climates are backing away from covering mold damage, you will have to pay the costs out of pocket, which can easily exceed several thousand dollars depending on the damage.

Clearly it is in your best interest to prevent mold in the first place. Take care of your HVAC system and thermostat with regular maintenance, and remember to wipe off any surfaces with cleaner and soft cloth. For dusty ductwork, hire a professional duct cleaning company like Victory Heating & Air. Try to choose cleaners and services that include coatings that will discourage further mold growth in the future. A UV air filter may also be able to kill mold spores as they pass through your system.

Apple Valley and the High Desert can be windy. When the winds blow across the desert, they lift up the tiny particles of dust and sand and move them right over towns. Your HVAC system sucks up grit and grime, and if you are lucky the filter in your system catches most of the sand and dust. Cleaning your filters on a regular basis does a lot for you, your family, and your HVAC system.

Heating and cooling your home becomes more expensive if your HVAC system is not running at peak efficiency. Older units can be a real energy hog and will drive up your monthly utility bill. In some cases, it pays to get a new system and in other cases it may benefit you to have your system tuned up instead of replacing it. Another way to save money on your heating and cooling costs is to change the filters on your HVAC system regularly. A clean filter helps your system run at peak efficiency. Routine maintenance also helps to recognize small problems before they become major repairs. If you have not had your HVAC system inspected recently, it is in your best interest to do so. Call Victory Heating & Air today.

HVAC maintenance for commercial buildings is important for a variety of reasons. Those include energy costs, health and welfare, productivity, and many other costs too.

How much of your buildings energy usage comes from climate control?

In most cases, the energy usage for an entire commercial building tips the scales around 40 percent for heating and cooling. In the High Desert region, keeping a building cool in summer and warm in winter is challenging. That is one reason commercial HVAC service is important.

Helping You Save Energy and Money

The more efficiently that an HVAC system run, the less energy it uses. The less efficiency with which an HVAC system operates, the more energy it consumes. With 40 percent of a building’s energy consumption going to the building’s HVAC system, the more money you spend to keep your building comfortable.

If you consider how much 40 percent of your energy costs you on an annual basis, then it should be pretty easy to find the incentive to save energy. One of the first things that you should consider is having your HVAC system inspected. Heating and cooling are necessary if you want to keep

, but there are many ways that an HVAC system can be tuned to save energy.

           What to Check First

First, consider how much energy it takes to heat or cool the areas of your building that are not occupied by tenants. If the duct system of your HVAC is not sealed, then you are paying for heat and cool of attic space. An HVAC technician can tell if your duct system is not sealed properly. Apple Valley gets hot in the summer, sealing your duct system allows your HVAC to efficiently warm or cool the areas of your commercial building that matter the most without wasting energy cooling spaces that do not matter.

           Hesperia Gets Windy

And the winds of the High Desert carry tiny particles of dust and sand. Make sure that your HVAC system is cleaned out at least quarterly. Those tiny grains of sand cause the moving parts of your HVAC to struggle and wear out quickly, which leads to HVAC repair costs.

If the idea is to save money then avoiding HVAC repair costs is a great way to do just that. Ongoing maintenance with regular filter care can save even more annually. Clean filters help the system run more efficiently, and they contribute to the overall health of a building. Healthy air helps make workers and tenants happier. There is an entire cycle of reasons that HVAC maintenance boosts your bottom line.
